“A brief history of Zoroastrianism in Azerbaijan” for BBC Travel

A story of mine on the last remaining traces of Zoroastrianism in Azerbaijan has been published a few days ago on BBC Travel. Zoroastrianism was once a major religion in the Eastern Caucasus, but disappeared as Islam spread starting from the 7th century CE. Zoroastrian places of worship were either destroyed or converted for new use and today only two fire temples believed to have Zoroastrian origins stand in Azerbaijan, protecting methane-fueled, ever-burning flames.
